Tools for Safeguarding & Welfare of Children & Young People:
Worked examples, case studies and monitoring and evaluating systems on CD-ROM

Increased focus on the inspection of safeguarding children and young people

From January 2010 NHS trusts and their service providers need to meet legally enforceable standards on safeguarding of children in order to register with the CQC. The CQC can register trusts with conditions, issue fines and even force closure to enforce compliance. Additionally, in October 2009 the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act came into force, introducing a centralised vetting system for people banned from working with children and vulnerable adults. There will be fines of up to £5,000 for anyone that knowingly employs individuals on the list or fails to make the relevant checks.

Support for health service providers

To support health service providers in complying with statutory guidance, national core standard C2 and the recommendations in the CQC’s July 2009 report ‘Keeping Children Safe’, Forum is publishing a practical, time-saving CD-ROM and companion handbook: Tools for Safeguarding & Welfare of Children & Young People.

This practical handbook and accompanying CD-ROM support CQC registration requirements for safeguarding by helping you to:

  • Lead high-quality practice in safeguarding with our worked example policies and procedures for: bullying; child protection; safer recruitment; missing child; complaints procedure for children experiencing difficulties; monitoring visitors/volunteers on site.
  • Develop excellent quality assurance and risk assessment systems using our worked examples including: checklists for auditing effectiveness of safeguarding procedures; incident report form; risk assessments; and questionnaires for gaining feedback from parents/carers and children.
  • Raise awareness of safeguarding issues among staff with our example job descriptions for designated safeguarding senior person; step by step guides to working with other staff on safeguarding; and PowerPoint training presentations for staff.
  • Ensure exemplary practice when collaborating with key agencies to safeguard children with our best practice case studies demonstrating effective working with other services; and step by step guides on how to raise concerns with other agencies about possible abuse/neglect/missing child.

Updates are issued quarterly to reflect any modifications to legal aspects or content, as well as for functional improvements. (See the order form for more details.)
